Celtic Beat Inter Milan

May 1967 saw the great Celtic Side under that greatest of all Scottish Managers Jock Stein.

The Celtic side that night was Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeil (Captain) Clark, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld, Lennox.

This team of relative unknown's were to take on Italy's best and come from behind to take the European crown. They gained immortality to be forever known as the Lions of Lisbon probably the greatest team to ever come out of Scotland.

The Inter team was built on class and were considered strong favourites to humiliate the Scottish Champions.

Portugal Gets Behind Celtic

Gemmell, Lisbon, Chalmers,

Portugal was to a man behind the Scottish side.

The weather should have been on the Italians side, it was hot and sticky more suited to the Italian players than the Scots.

The Italians scored first and from then on there was one Scottish assault after another bombarding the Italian goal seeking the equaliser.

The italian players looked a bedraggled bunch with half an hour to go Gemmell scored the goal that levelled the tie, Italian hearts were broken and the end was almost inevitable as the lions of Lisbon once more went on the offensive.

You started to almost feel sorry for the Italian giants never had a team looked so spent and when Chalmers scored the winning goal with five minutes of the tie left you almost wished the referee would stop the tie and put the sorry bunch of Inter players out of their misery.
