Lester Piggott

Youngest Ever Derby Winner at 18

Riding a 33-1 outsider unfancied by everyone and being ridden by the youngest jockey in the 1954 Derby not many people gave Never Say Die any hope of winning the biggest Classic in the English Flat racing season.

Lester from Lambourn Berkshire was to become one of the greatest ever English jockies but this was early in his career and he was really just starting out..

Lester whose father had been a jockey was confident to the point of cockiness.

The reporters also found out how difficult he was to get an interview with. He was then as he became in later life unemotional, in answer to questions he replied No I had no difficulty, yes he had always been in the first five, yes he was sure he was going to win once they had made the straight.

On Quick Look

what's all the fuss about it's just another race.

He did elaborate 'I took one quick look behind me a furlong from the post and then I knew we were home.'

When asked to appear on TV he said what's all the fuss about it's just another race.
